It seems like there is a constant stream of weird viral videos popping up on social media. This week, a clip purporting to show actor Gary Busey discussing “buttered sausage” is leaving viewers bewildered. But what is buttered sausage and why is Gary Busey talking about it?

The video, which has been doing the rounds on TikTok, is quite peculiar. During what appears to be a podcast interview, Busey tells the interviewer that he wants to talk about buttered sausage. He explains that he wants to know “where it comes from, what it does” and “why it is doing what it is doing”.

Of course, one can only speculate as to why this particular sausage variant is doing what it does. However, Busey seems particularly perturbed by its presence telling the interviewer to “get it out of my face”.

So, what is buttered sausage and why is Gary Busey talking about it?

Despite being viewed millions of times and shared across social media, the “buttered sausage” video is not real. In fact, it is a deepfake.

Deepfakes use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to create fake videos of people that appear to be real.

Because of Gary Busey’s unconventional appearance and reputation, this strange clip is somewhat believable for those who aren’t used to spotting deepfakes.

Consequently, Gary Busey is not talking about buttered sausage at all. Instead, this uncanny valley deepfake video is simply a funny – and somewhat disturbing – use of AI tools to create a viral meme.

Unfortunately, we are no closer to knowing what buttered sausage truly is. One can only assume that it is a sausage cooked or slathered in butter.
