9 Good & Legal Sites to Watch Free Movies Online (2023)

The world of cinema and streaming is as popular as ever. But we are also living through challenging times, and people everywhere are looking to cut costs. That means many film fans are cancelling their subscriptions to services such as Netflix and forgoing expensive trips to movie theatres. Thankfully, there are websites online where you can watch free movies. And, best of all, they are totally legal.

However, before we get into our list of movie sites that are worth a visit, there is something important you should note. While these websites are good, useful, and convenient, they don’t provide the breadth and depth of content like premium streaming services do.

That is not to say you won’t find some great stuff to watch. But the number of mainstream and blockbuster movies available to stream will be limited on any legal free movie website. With that being said, if you take some time to carefully browse through their libraries, there’s a good chance you’ll find some hidden gems.

In this article, we will detail nine legal sites where you can watch free movies online in 2023. Once we’ve shared our list, we will also talk about each of the sites in a bit more detail so you know what to expect. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Sites to Watch Free Movies Online in 2023

YouTube

Believe it or not, one of the best free and legal places to watch movies online is YouTube. There are actually numerous full-length films available on the video sharing platform, as well as entire channels dedicated to free movies. While these channels tend to upload low budget films, their back catalogues tend to be large so there is lots to choose from.

The quality, age, and genre of films varies widely, and there are even some blockbusters available to watch at no cost. Of course, most will feature adverts (which is standard for YouTube videos these days), so you will have to sit through those.

Unfortunately, free films can be tricky to find on YouTube and they are not properly categorised and sorted. Therefore, you’ll likely need to spend some time browsing before you find something you want to watch.

Tubi

The variety of content on Tubi is seriously surprising considering it’s free. It features a huge number of television shows and movies (including some legitimate blockbusters) among its extensive collection.

Its content is also broken down into clear and easy to navigate categories and genres, so it’s fairly straightforward to find something that will appeal to you.

While its movies and TV shows do include some adverts, the trade off is worth it. And, perhaps best of all, you don’t even need to make an account to use Tubi. Simply visit the website and start watching right away.

Vudu

Vudu requires an account to start watching its free movies and TV shows. But once you’ve created one, you can dive right into its library of 1,500+ movies.

Exactly how many of the free films and shows on Vudu appeal to you will depend on your own tastes. Don’t expect too many blockbusters or big-budget movies here.

However, you can use filters to break them down into categories to make things easier to find. And, if you’re still struggling to find something that takes your fancy, you can always rent or buy a film or TV show through Vudu.

Freevee

Freevee is essentially Amazon Prime but free. In fact, it is owned by Amazon and operates as part of Amazon Prime.

To watch movies and TV series on Freevee, you simply need an Amazon account and the Prime app (or you can watch in-browser). It includes a variety of big name movies (although its TV selection is lacking) and they all stream in great quality.

As you might expect, content on Freevee is interlaced with adverts. But when you’re getting some quality films and shows for nothing, that’s far from a deal breaker.

Pluto TV

Pluto TV is another free streaming service for movies and TV shows that doesn’t require an account. While its categorisation isn’t the best, it does allow users to search for content.

Its movies and shows also stream in good quality which makes them easy to watch. Unfortunately, however, users will have to tolerate lengthy advert interruptions every now and again when watching on Pluto TV.

Popcornflix

While not the best free movie service on this list, Popcornflix is worth checking out. Its straightforward user interface isn’t much to look at, but it does provide handy categorisation for its sizeable content catalogue.

With that being said, its offering of well-known movies and series is limited. However, if you have the time and the patience to sift through lots of not-so-great stuff, you will eventually come across some diamonds. You’ll also have to put up with some ads, too.

Plex

Plex stands out thanks to its clean user interface and decent offering of movies and TV series. There’s also a variety of live channels to browse through if you can’t find anything on-demand.

Conveniently, the service uses categories to make navigating around that bit easier and video quality is solid. Handily, no account is required to start watching and adverts aren’t overbearing.

The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel isn’t a standout here, but it’s a decent enough service for what it is. As Roku’s free streaming service, you can find an OK selection of movies and series to check out if you’re struggling to find anything to watch elsewhere.

There are some strong (albeit dated) shows included. Sadly, the film offering is a bit less impressive and doesn’t feature much in the way of modern movies or big-name blockbusters.

To get started on The Roku Channel, you will need to create a Roku account (which is easy to do). As with many of the other services on this list, there are also adverts present when streaming.

Crackle

Crackle is perhaps the least notable of the services on this list. However, it’s still a good option for anyone looking to watch a movie without having to spend a penny.

Sure, it’s library is lacking contemporary blockbusters and mainstream hits. But if you’re a film lover who just wants something fun to watch without spending a penny, you will undoubtedly find something.

It’s selection of television shows is equally average, however you can start streaming without an account and there aren’t too many intrusive ads to dampen the experience.
