EA’s mega-hit football video game franchise could be renamed in the near future. That’s probably surprising news. FIFA games have been a major money earner for decades and it’s a name everyone is familiar with. But in the age of live services and seasonal content, FIFA games getting a new name isn’t quite as unlikely as you might think.

FIFA 22 has already broken records since its release on 1st October 2021, according to EA. In a recent press release, EA SPORTS Group GM Cam Weber confirmed they’ve “already had 9.1 million players join the game, 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads created and 460 million matches played”. Impressive stuff. But they also had some interesting things to say about renaming the juggernaut football series…

Are FIFA games getting a new name? What we know…

It seems the probability of a FIFA rename is high – and Cam Weber’s press release confirmed they’re ‘exploring’ it. Weber said of a potential rename: “As we look ahead, we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA SPORTS football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA”.

So, there you have it in black and white. While a new name for FIFA games isn’t guaranteed, it’s a relatively safe bet. And FIFA 22 could well be the final EA Sports football game to bear the FIFA name. Weber also stressed this decision won’t impact any other licensing agreements they have, saying their agreement with FIFA “is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.” According to EA, they have “over 300 individual licensed partners that give us access to 17,000+ athletes across 700+ teams, in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues around the world.”

What is EA Sports FC?

Following the press release, reports surfaced that EA has filed a trademark with the UK and European Union Intellectual Property Offices for ‘EA Sports FC’. It’s currently unclear exactly what EA Sports FC is. But given the recent news, many suspect this will be the FIFA new name change. Of course, we’ll keep the updates coming as we learn more.
