Better Call Saul Season 6: 7 Looming Questions Answered

Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill in Better Call Saul season 5

Since Better Call Sauls incredible fifth season concluded on AMC and Netflix in April 2020, many questions about Better Call Saul season 6 remain up in the air. Information about season 6 has trickled out very slowly, and the Covid-19 pandemic kiboshed plans to release it in 2021.

If you’re a big fan of the series (which we’re guessing you are), you’re probably already used to long waits. A full year passed between Better Call Saul season 2 and Better Call Saul season 3. Viewers then waited just over a year for Better Call Saul season 4. And an additional 16 months went by before Better Call Saul season 5 arrived. So, it’s something we’ve all come to expect. But those intervals were worth it. The show has gotten better with each passing season. When it first debuted, Breaking Bad fans who were hesitant to give it a chance were asking “is Better Call Saul good?”, and after five critically acclaimed seasons the answer is a resounding “YES”. There’s a case to be made that it’s actually even better than Breaking Bad!

Here is everything you need to know about season 6 ahead of its eventual arrival (*SPOILERS* for Better Call Saul ahead)

1 – When is the Better Call Saul Season 6 release date?

Will there be a season 6 of Better Call Saul? Yes is the answer to that question. Season 6 has been confirmed, and it will be the show’s last. That much we know definitively. This fits nicely with its precursor series Breaking Bad, which concluded after season 5 part 2 (essentially its sixth season). By that point, it was clear Breaking Bad‘s narrative was approaching its dramatic end. And the same is happening in Better Call Saul. We’re getting ever closer to the start of the events of Breaking Bad, and Jimmy McGill has almost completed his transformation into crooked lawyer Saul Goodman.

As for when season 6 will actually debut, expect it to arrive sometime in the first quarter for 2022. This will keep it in line with the February-April release window of seasons 1, 2, 3 and 5. As we mentioned, it was originally scheduled for 2021 but this was delayed due to coronavirus.

2 – Has a Better Call Saul Season 6 trailer been released?

A trailer for the final season of Better Call Saul hasn’t been released yet. We’ll be sure to share it here once it has. In previous years, the trailers usually arrived a month or two before the new season’s full release, so expect a similar pattern for season 6.

3 – How to watch Better Call Saul Season 6?

The final season hasn’t finished filming and details about its airing haven’t been confirmed. However, it’s guaranteed to be broadcast on AMC in the United States. But can we expect Better Call Saul season 6 on Netflix? Netflix is the home of Better Call Saul in the UK and one of its main distributors, so it’s safe to assume the series will return to the streaming platform for its sixth and final season. So, if you watched the rest of Better Call Saul on Netflix you’re likely to be in luck when season 6 arrives.

4 – What will Better Call Saul Season 6’s story be?

As you’d expect, very little has been shared about the story of season 6. Given how season 5 left things, we can assume season 6 will address the final stages of Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman. We should also learn exactly what goes down between Nacho and Lalo, and how Saul is brought into the equation. Way back in season 2 of Breaking Bad, Saul alluded to the two men. So it will be interesting see what the writers do to fully address this connection.

One thing that’s guaranteed is a conclusion to the series’ overarching Gene Takavic storyline. As a reminder, Gene is Jimmy’s alias in the post-Breaking Bad flash forwards that feature in the opening episodes of each season. In season 5, he was identified as Saul Goodman by a man from New Mexico. He’s grown increasingly paranoid and it’s clear his story is nearing its end-point. Peter Gould has noted that season 6 may explore the flash forwards and Gene’s story in more detail, and we can’t wait to see how that plays out.

5 – How many Better Call Saul season 6 episodes will there be?

Every season so far has contained 10 episodes. This trend is set to change for the final season, which will have 13 episodes in total. The additional episodes should allow the writers to bring Better Call Saul to a cohesive end.

6 – How many Better Call Saul seasons will there be?

There will be six seasons of Better Call Saul in total when the show concludes its run. This means the next season will be its last.

The majority of speculation about the new season is focused on its story. What will happen to Jimmy/Saul? Will Lalo Salamanca track down Nacho? Will we finally find out why Kim Wexler doesn’t appear in Breaking Bad? Co-showrunner Peter Gould has said by the end of season 6, viewers will see Breaking Bad in “a very different light”. So, something tells me a dramatic twist in the wider Breaking Bad story will take place at some point during Better Call Saul‘s sixth season. Let’s take a look back at what’s happened prior to season 6…

Better Call Saul Seasons 1-5 Recap

So far, there have been five seasons of Better Call Saul. Season 1 debuted back in 2015 after Breaking Bad wrapped up in 2013. In season 1, Jimmy McGill was a reformed petty criminal and struggling lawyer. His brother Chuck McGill (a highly accomplished lawyer) was housebound and suffered from a strange psychosomatic condition known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity disorder. This meant he couldn’t venture outside his home or be around anything electrical, so Jimmy cared for him. Mike Ehrmantraut – a key character in Breaking Bad – was a retired cop and parking lot attendant who worked odd jobs as a bodyguard and ‘fixer’.

Much has changed since then. Chuck committed suicide after being forced to leave his law firm. Mike Ehrmantraut has been pulled further into the criminal underworld. He is working for Gus Fring and assisted in the construction of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman’s future meth lab. Jimmy now practices law as Saul Goodman after being stripped of his law license and subsequently regaining it. Nacho Varga – who begins the series as a low level criminal in Hector Salamanca’s gang – has worked his way through the ranks. He’s now a reluctant mole for Gus and enabled the attempted assassination of Lalo Salamanca. Lalo was introduced in season 4 as the new leader of the Salamanca gang.

7 – Will Walt and Jesse appear in Better Call Saul Season 6?

Breaking Bad‘s main characters – Walt and Jesse – haven’t appeared in Better Call Saul. But lots of other characters have now been a part of the prequel series. This includes DEA agents Hank Schrader and Steve Gomez who appeared in season 5. We can expect even more Breaking Bad characters to show their faces in Better Call Saul as the timelines merge.
