Call of Duty has been living in the shadow of the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot over the last two years. But that’s changed with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
After early access for the game’s campaign, players are now jumping into Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer mode. And players are curious about the new features and changes they’re now seeing for the first time.
Infinity Ward has revamped one fan-favourite feature in particular – Gunsmith. The way players customise, progress, and unlock new weapons has changed.
And this has left players asking how to unlock weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer.
Players will undoubtedly want to try out all the weapons they possibly can. Having said that, Infinity Ward’s changes to the Gunsmith and weapon progression systems may be confusing at first.
That’s because they’ve changed it to make guns highly customisable and to offer you more control over the weapons you build.
Weapons are now separated into “Platforms”. Each Platform starts with one weapon, such as the M4. When you customise the M4 in Gunsmith, you will notice a new attachment known as a “Receiver”.
The Receiver essentially acts as the ‘base’ of your weapon build. And this is the key change to weapon unlocks in Modern Warfare II.

How To Unlock Weapons In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer
Now you know the basics of what’s changed, you need to know exactly how to unlock the guns you want.
While it may seem confusing at first, it’s actually pretty straightforward.
This is how to unlock weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer: Weapons are unlocked by progressing specific guns within a weapon “Platform” to a certain level. This unlocks new “Receivers” within the Platform and the corresponding weapon.
To see how it works for yourself, go into the M4’s Gunsmith screen. Go to the Progression tab. You will see the weapons within the M4 Platform. Press X/A on the M4 to see its progression-based unlockables.
This will show you at which level new Receivers are unlocked. At M4 level 18, you will unlock the 556 Icarus Receiver (thus unlocking the 556 Icarus weapon). At level 13 of the 556 Icarus, you will unlock the M16. When you reach level 16 of the M16, you will unlock the FSS Hurricane.
