We like asking the big questions! And right now, we’re wondering “Will there be an Edge of Tomorrow 2?”. Edge of Tomorrow debuted on the big screen 7 years ago. It was headlined by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as Major William Cage and Sergeant Rita Vrataski respectively, and it turned out to be a surprisingly great sci-fi action flick. The film followed Major Cage on a disorienting mission to defeat invading aliens while trying to escape a time loop.

Edge of Tomorrow‘s ending was about as clear cut as you could realistically expect given the subject matter. But it felt like there was room for more. And when you’re dealing with time loops and alien invasions, there’s plot flexibility which could allow for new stories. Despite this, it’s still unclear if and when Edge of Tomorrow 2 will arrive in cinemas. However, we’ve pulled together everything we know about the elusive Live Die Repeat follow-up. Let’s see if we can figure out where it’s at…

Reviews and box office

Before we get into the potential sequel, let’s take a look back at how the original film fared on release. Reviews for Edge of Tomorrow were largely positive. Significant praise was given to the movie’s use of its time loop premise, visual effects, alien design, and comedic elements. It currently holds a ‘Certified Fresh’ critic review score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 90% audience score.

Money-wise, Edge of Tomorrow didn’t do quite so well. With a budget of $178 million, it raked in $370.5 million at the box office. That’s not bad by any stretch, but it’s not exactly earth shattering by modern standards. And sequels are often far more likely if the initial outing performs better than expected. Interestingly, director Doug Liman reckoned the first film would’ve made more money if it didn’t bear the Edge of Tomorrow title. He preferred the Live Die Repeat name.

Edge of Tomorrow 2: Release Date

When will Edge of Tomorrow 2 be released? Well, there’s no confirmed release date just yet. And even though there’s definitely an appetite for further adventures in this fictional universe, it’s seems far from guaranteed. In December 2015, Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie said:

“We have the idea for the sequel locked and loaded.”

That sounds quite positive, right? A few months later in April 2016, it was reported that Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman would be helming the Live Die Repeat sequel. Apparently, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (screenwriters of Race) had joined the project to write the script, too.

One year passed with little news. Then, in 2017, Liman spoke to Collider and shared the name of the sequel. No – it’s not actually called Edge of Tomorrow 2. The official name is apparently Live Die Repeat and Repeat. But did he share a Live Die Repeat and Repeat release date? Nah. Although he did confirm that both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt were keen to return. Regarding when the film will actually happen, he said:

“The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.”

But that was a long time ago. And with no mention of a definitive release date since then, it’s safe to assume things haven’t progressed as planned.

Edge of Tomorrow 2: Trailer

With no official announcement of Live Die Repeat 2, we’re yet to see any form of trailer. Obviously, nothing’s been filmed yet so there wouldn’t be much to show in a trailer anyhow. When a trailer eventually arrives, we’ll be sure to update this article to include it here.

We’ve actually got some answers here! As mentioned, both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have expressed interest in returning for Live Die Repeat and Repeat. So it’s nigh-on guaranteed that if the movie does happen, it’ll star the two of them. It sounds like the problem is related more to individual schedules and the cost of making the film than anything else. Emily Blunt told Howard Stern:

“We wanted to. Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive. Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make.”

Director Doug Liman shared a similar sentiment about schedules. In January 2021, he said to Collider:

“It’s one of these things where if Tom, Emily and I were to say, ‘we’re ready to pull the trigger on this script,’ it’s Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the film gets made.”

What will Live Die Repeat and Repeat be about?

While the plot for Edge of Tomorrow 2/Live Die Repeat and Repeat has been kept under wraps, there are a few details we can glean from comments made by the film’s crew. It’s also clear that everyone who has seen the script and has some knowledge of the story is excited. Doug Liman said a few years ago that “We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film.” So he’s definitely happy with the plan for the sequel. Likewise, Emily Blunt shared her thoughts last year: “Yes, [the script] is really promising and really, really cool” she said.

In terms of what the movie will be about, there aren’t any specifics. Although, earlier this year Doug Liman told Collider: “I’ve always been interested in the idea of a sequel being more character-driven than the first film, because that’s not how things are normally done.” There have also been rumours that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will see the main characters travel backwards in time, putting a slightly different spin on the approach taken in the first film.

In an October 2019 interview with comicbookmovie.com, Doug Liman simply confirmed “The script is ready”. However, the screenplay had gone through some rewrites by Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Spectre) and Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) before being completed. Substantial plot information is scarce, but clearly the second part of this story is ready to be told. Will it focus on another alien invasion? Will the aliens somehow reverse time and undo the events of the first film? We don’t know – but we’ll update you once there are more details to share.
