After two years of few big video game releases, 2022 didn’t disappoint. Gamers were treated to some truly fantastic blockbuster games like Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok, as well as surprise breakout hits like Stray and Cult of the Lamb. But now everyone is looking to next year and gamers want to know which games are coming out in January 2023.

While 2022 delivered some seriously good games, there were a few months where it felt like there was nothing to play. And that stemmed from pandemic-related delays that sucked the life out of the video game industry throughout 2020 and 2021.

Thankfully, 2023 has its biggest releases spread throughout the year. And that means there will be at least a couple of top games to look forward to every month.

Traditionally, January has been a quiet month for releases because of the mad rush to launch new titles in time for the pre-Christmas period and then the holiday season itself. But this year, January has some exciting games to look forward to.

So, let’s take a look at the best games coming out in January 2023…

It may be a new year but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the perfect time to revisit an old classic.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition was released for PC back in November 2019 but in January it’s making its debut on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Age of Empires II is arguably the most iconic game in the long-running real-time strategy series. First released way back in 1999, the game sees players take control of medieval civilisations and battle for control of a region against other great powers.

The formula has been tinkered with over the years – most recently in 2021’s long-awaited Age of Empires IV – but II remains the most beloved game in the series.

The Definitive Edition features remastered 4K graphics, improved textures and visuals, a new spectator mode, and four new civilisations in the bundled The Last Khans update.

If you’re an Xbox player without a PC who loved this classic strategy game as a kid, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is a must-play this January.

2. Forspoken

Release Date: 24th January 2023

Platforms: PlayStation 5, PC

These days, it seems it’s becoming more and more uncommon to see fresh IPs. But January has a huge one in store for us.

Forspoken is a new action RPG from developers Luminous Productions and publisher Square Enix. It stars Ella Balinska (Netflix’s Resident Evil) as Frey Holland. Frey is a girl from New York City who finds herself lost in the magical world of Athia.

In the game, Frey comes up against the Tantas – a tyrannical ruling clan that control Athia. Frey must use her new found magical powers to explore Athia, defeat enemies, and find her way home.

Forspoken has drawn attention thanks to its fantasy open-world and unique traversal mechanics which allow Frey to dash and fly across Athia.

In January, we are finally getting the chance to revisit the survival-horror classic Dead Space. It has been a long time coming – but it looks to be well worth the wait.

Built from the ground-up as a full blown remake, Dead Space will see players jump back into the shoes of Isaac Clarke on doomed mining ship the USG Ishimura.

The game follows Isaac as he journeys to the Ishimura in search of his girlfriend, Nicole Brennan. When he arrives, Isaac and his crew uncover horrific creatures known as Necromorphes that are made of mutated human corpses.

The new Dead Space remake is undoubtedly the biggest game coming out in January 2023. The original is widely regarded as one of the best survival horror video games ever made. And this new remake is set to include redesigned character models and environments to deliver a truly modern experience.

If you loved the original or are a complete new-comer, the 2023 Dead Space remake should top your list of games to play this January.
