GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 was a ground-breaking game when it came out back in 1997. It redefined the first-person shooter genre and, in doing so, became an instant classic. After years of speculation and a cancelled Xbox 360 remaster, journalist Jeff Grubb has stated a GoldenEye remake or remaster could be announced in the coming weeks.

GoldenEye Remake/Remaster Is Coming Soon

2022 is the 60th anniversary of the James Bond franchise. A revival of the iconic title would be the perfect way for gamers to celebrate the historic franchise.

Speaking on his show GrubbSnax, Jeff Grubb said (thanks, VGC!), “I think that Microsoft is going to be the one to announce that [GoldenEye] first. I think this game is probably coming pretty soon, I’m thinking next couple of weeks.”

Nintendo, Microsoft and MGM share the rights to GoldenEye, with the approval of all three needed to rerelease the game. This has led to legal troubles before, including the cancellation of the Xbox 360 remaster. An early build of that remaster eventually leaked online.

Last month, TrueAchievements, a website that syncs in-game Xbox achievements with live console servers, catalogued the full list of GoldenEye 007 achievements. Only two users have attained any of the 55 achievements, BIGsheep and Waylander73. These user accounts reportedly belong to Rare’s lead engineer James Thomas and community head Christina McGrath.

Will GoldenEye re-release be a remake or a remaster?

These days, the terms remake and remaster are often used interchangeably. It can lead to a lot of confusion. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet if this re-release will be a GoldenEye remake or a remaster. That’s because a number of outlets are using both terms. However, it seems more likely that this re-release will be a GoldenEye remaster.

For those who are confused by the difference, a remake is when developers rebuild a classic game from the ground up. Remakes have modern visuals, re-recorded audio, refined gameplay mechanics and sometimes even story changes. Remasters, on the other hand, involve the implementation of HD resolution and textures, reworked lighting, and remastered audio. Essentially, a remaster is the same game but improved with modern tech.

GoldenEye Remake Release Date

Luckily, fans shouldn’t have to wait long to find out when GoldenEye will be coming out. If an announcement is indeed coming in the next few weeks, it’s fair to speculate that the new GoldenEye‘s release date will be later this year.
