A trailer purporting to show a new Harry Potter movie coming in 2025 has surfaced on TikTok. The one-minute and 17-second long preview has already been watched more than 12.5 million times and received almost 500,000 likes. Understandably, it has whipped excited and hopeful Potterheads into a frenzy.

The trailer for the long-awaited ninth film in the series begins with the nostalgic tones of John Williams’ “Hedwig’s Theme”. After a dramatic teaser featuring a bearded Daniel Radcliffe, fans are given a glimpse of the supposed movie’s name and logo – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

As many Potter fans will know, this is the name of critically-acclaimed play that debuted in the West End on 7th June 2016. Various other productions of the play have since opened around the world.

When the TikTok trailer begins, fans are invited “to return to the Wizarding World”. Ambiguous clips supposedly from the movie are shown as a mysterious voice says “I have some questions for you, professor.” Viewers are then informed the Cursed Child will arrive in theatres and on HBO Max.

Given the incredible viral success of the video, it’s unsurprising that many fans now believe a new Harry Potter film is on the way. But, sadly, the trailer isn’t what it seems.

Is the new Harry Potter 2025 movie trailer real?

The new Harry Potter 2025 movie trailer is not real. It is a fan-made trailer shared by TikTok creator Mister Trailer.

Mister Trailer regularly uploads both real and fan-made trailers for films, TV shows, and video games. The fan-made trailer for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child uses clips from other movies in the Wizarding World franchise, primarily the Fantastic Beasts films.

The brief shots of Daniel Radcliffe have been taken from 2020 Australian film Escape from Pretoria. That movie tells the true story of Tim Jenkin (played by Radcliffe) and his daring prison escape in South Africa.

Notably, the use of the HBO Max name and logo is outdated. The service was rebranded as “Max” in May 2023, providing further evidence of the trailer’s illegitimacy.

Fans react to Harry Potter 2025 movie trailer

As with many fake trailers that go viral online, the reaction from fans has been one of confusion and frustration. One disappointed TikTok user commented “we all wish this was real”, while another said “I finally have something to look forward to in life”.

It didn’t take long for Potter fans to start joking about the trailer. “Harry Potter and the dodgy fire stick”, quipped TikTok user LoggieB. User tjc007 used a popular quote from Harry Potter himself to express his upset: “how dare you stand where he stood”, they commented.

Is a new Harry Potter film being made?

Despite the bogus trailer circulating on TikTok, there are currently no plans to make a film version of Cursed Child. It remains a highly successful play and J. K. Rowling has previously said it will not be made into a movie.

Of course, Rowling’s comments have done little to quell speculation. However, Daniel Radcliffe has also explained that he has no interest in returning to the franchise. However, he did add that “I’m never going to say never”.

While the fan-made TikTok trailer clearly demonstrates the overwhelming interest audiences still have in Harry Potter, it remains to be seen if a ninth movie will ever be made. Until then, it’s certainly fun to speculate on how that film might look and what it will be about.
