Last week, it was widely reported that Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Oppenheimer) was set to star in the unannounced Far Cry 7 game. However, the leaker that inadvertently started the rumour has put an end to the speculation and criticised the media for misrepresenting his original tweet.

YouTuber and streamer j0nathan posted a cryptic tweet on 20 April which included four images: one each of actor Cillian Murphy, a large crab, a bomb with a 72-hour timer, and the number “7”. The pictures were accompanied by the caption “If nothing changes by then”.

The mysterious tweet was then used by various publications to fuel rumours that Murphy would be starring as the main villain in Far Cry 7, the same way Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) starred in Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 6, respectively.

j0nathan gained his reputation as a reliable leaker by correctly revealing information about Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage ahead of its release. Consequently, his tweet gained significant traction online.

In an update, j0nathan decried gaming news outlets for misconstruing his tweet.

“It annoys me how the media has been remixing this tweet since yesterday. I posted 4 images, without giving more details, and they are making articles like “JONATHAN ANNOUNCES THAT CILLIAN MURPHY WILL BE THE BIG BAD OF FAR CRY 7″,” wrote the YouTuber.

He continued, “If I had wanted to say that I would have simply written it, you bunch of puppets”.

In a separate post, j0nathan offered clarification about his original tweet. “Mind you, I NEVER said Cillian Murphy was going to be in the game. The image means something else,” he wrote.

What exactly the four images imply is anyone’s guess; however, it’s now clear that they do not mean that fans can expect to see Tommy Shelby in a future Far Cry game.
