Survive received a less than stellar reception when it launched – fans and critics panned it. And many struggled to understand why Konami decided to take their legendary IP in such a confusing direction.

Following Hideo Kojima’s unceremonious departure from Konami after the completion of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it was inevitable the company would try to cash-in on one of gaming’s most adored franchises – Metal Gear. For those who don’t know, Hideo Kojima created the Metal Gear series. The first game in the landmark series was the eponymous Metal Gear, which was released in 1987.

It marked the beginning of the stealth genre in video games and spawned eight sequels and prequels, and numerous spin-offs. The main entires in the series received critical acclaim. However, they weren’t without their flaws – namely a long-running, convoluted narrative. But their impressive graphics, exciting gameplay, and memorable characters won the hearts of gamers.

So, it’s safe to say that fans were not impressed when Konami pressed on with the franchise and unveiled Metal Gear Survive. It was a complete change for the series, however that wasn’t a good thing. The focus was now on zombie slaying and survival. Sure – survival had been a key part of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater‘s success, but not like this.

Perhaps if Metal Gear Survive stood separately from the series and didn’t bear its name, punters would have been kinder. But it did – and high standards and expectations came with it.
