Reacher‘s second season is an absolute thrill ride. It improves on the previous season in just about every way and makes for a gripping watch.
This time round, the eponymous Jack Reacher joins back up with his old unit – the Special Investigators – to investigate the murders and disappearances of some of its former members.
Along the way, Reacher’s team works with the NYPD. Specifically, a police officer named Guy Russo is investigating their activities and, eventually, helping them.
In episode 6 – “New York’s Finest” – Russo pays a visit to another police officer called Marsh. The two argue and Marsh confesses to taking bribes from this season’s villain, Shane Langston. Given the complex conspiracy at the heart of season 2’s story, you may be confused by who Marsh is and how he fits into the show’s plot.
After all, numerous characters have been coming and going throughout the season and it can be difficult to keep track if you’re not watching closely enough. With that being said, let’s break down Marsh’s role in Reacher and why he is important.
Who is Marsh in Reacher?
Marsh is Guy Russo’s boss and a lieutenant in the NYPD. As revealed by his office door in episode 4, his full name is Drew Marsh. He is portrayed by Al Sapienza.
As of episode 6, he has only appeared in two scenes during season 2 of Reacher. His first appearance took place in episode 4 “A Night at the Symphony”. In that episode, he called Russo to his office. He angrily scolded him for working with Reacher’s unit and blamed him for the chaos they had been causing. Marsh instructed Russo to go and find out what the Special Investigators know and a frustrated Russo left his office after promising to take care of it.
This tied into the revelation in episode 6 that Lieutenant Marsh had been taking bribes from Shane Langston in exchange for information about Reacher’s unit. That means Marsh had been passing on updates regarding an ongoing investigation to a man whose operations were linked to terrorists.
Russo also accused Marsh of setting Reacher and the other Special Investigators up during Franz’s funeral. They were attacked during the service but survived. Marsh denied involvement in this but tried to persuade Russo to begin taking bribes from Langston. He believed taking the money was the safer option and believes Langston to be highly dangerous.
After Russo declines, he begins to wonder if Marsh will come after him. This culminated in Russo being shot – and presumably killed – during the conclusion of episode 6 after being chased by Langston’s men.
