We are now four episodes into HBO’s The Last Of Us and things are starting to seriously heat up. After last week’s magnificent slow-burn chronicling the relationship of Frank and Bill, the latest episode ratcheted up the action.
Joel and Ellie are now well into their journey across post-pandemic America. They have already encountered their fair share of Infected. But now attention has been shifted towards what is perhaps an even more deadly threat – other people.
After leaving Bill and Frank’s with a stocked up truck, Joel and Ellie venture towards Kansas City, Missouri. Much of this episode’s opening scenes are expertly lifted straight from the first The Last Of Us game. So anyone who’s played them knows what’s coming.
After arriving at a blocked tunnel, Joel decides the pair need to venture through the seemingly deserted urban jungle to avoid a huge detour.
Once inside the city, Joel and Ellie get lost and discover that the QZ is abandoned. Soon, they come across an apparently injured man pleading for help. Joel, wise to the hunter’s antics, tells Ellie to buckle up and ploughs the car past the man.
Things quickly turn bad when the truck crashes into an old store and the hunters start firing on Joel and Ellie. An intense action scene ensues but eventually Joel and Ellie kill the hunters.
We then learn that the hunters were part of a bigger community of survivors that overthrew FEDRA. They are led by Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey) who wants to know the location of two rebeles: Henry (Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodward).
But who are Henry and Sam in The Last Of Us? And what do we know about them?
Who Are Henry And Sam In The Last Of Us?
Like most of the characters in The Last Of Us TV show, Henry and his little brother Sam also appear in the games. However, they are introduced differently in the HBO adaption.
For starters, this whole city sequence takes place in Pittsburgh in the games. In the TV adaption, Joel and Ellie go through Kansas City.
Similarly, the personalities and backstories of the hunters is expanded in the TV show. Their leader, Kathleen, is a brand-new character created just for the show. And the people she’s after – Henry and Sam – have a slightly different story, too.
This is who Henry and Sam are in The Last Of Us: In the TV show, Henry and Sam are two brothers that fled the group of Kansas City hunters led by Kathleen. In the game, they were part of a larger group that wandered into Pittsburgh before they were ambushed, split up, and many of them killed. They then team up with Joel and Ellie to escape the city.
At the end of The Last Of Us episode 4, Joel and Ellie take refuge in an abandoned office building. He is is awoken by a panic-stricken Ellie as Henry and Sam hold them at gun point.

Henry and Sam are inseparable and the elder sibling cares deeply for his little brother, acting as his guardian.
Both their parents are dead and Henry believes he and Sam will see them again in the afterlife. Sam later confesses that he isn’t so sure.
Henry and Sam left the quarantine zone in Hartford, Connecticut when it was abandoned by the military. As part of a group, they ventured into Pittsburgh in search of supplies where they were ambushed.
When climbing into an apartment building, Joel is attacked by Henry when he mistakes him for a hunter. They quickly establish they aren’t each other’s enemies and agree to work together to get out of the city.
Henry and Sam take Joel and Ellie to the office block where they have been holed up (mirroring the TV show). From here, they plan their escape from the hunters.
Major Spoilers and Potential Spoilers For The Game and TV Show Ahead
After escaping Pittsburgh, Joel, Ellie, Sam, and Henry venture through the sewers where they encounter many Infected. They manage to escape into the suburbs and appear to be safe.
Unfortunately, they are identified by a sniper and yet more hunters. The gun-fight draws Infected and the group are attacked. They appear to get away unscathed.
After taking refuge inside an old house, Ellie gives Sam a toy robot she found back in the city. Sam seems depressed and throws the robot to the floor after Ellie leaves.
In the morning, she goes to check on Sam and discovers that he has become infected having sustained a bite in the fight the previous day.
Sam attacks Ellie and but Henry prevents Joel from shooting him. After a distressing pause, Henry shoots his brother in the head before turning the gun on himself and pulling the trigger.
