Upcoming Games 2021 – Far Cry 6
Release date: 7th October 2021
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna, Stadia
Any list covering what games are coming out in 2021 would be remiss to leave out Far Cry 6. The next chapter in Ubisoft’s action-adventure series is set on the fictional Caribbean island of Yara. Yara is ruled by dictator Antón Castillo – otherwise known as “El Presidente”. In an effort to continue Far Cry‘s success in creating memorable villains, Ubisoft cast Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad fame in the role. Yara is reportedly the series biggest map yet. And players will control Dani Rojas while they explore it. Dani is a guerilla fighter trying to bring down Castillo’s regime, and can be played as either male or female. Unique weaponry will be a huge part of the game, and will include things like a lethal CD launcher. You’ll even be able to launch rockets from your backpack or use it as a jetpack!
Dying Light 2
Release Date: 7th December 2021
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Free-running and zombie survival horror might seem like an unusual combination. But Techland proved it could work with 2015’s Dying Light. And 2021 games don’t get much more anticipated than the long-awaited Dying Light 2 Stay Human. The game was originally announced way back at E3 2018, but its 2021 release date was only recently confirmed. Dying Light 2 will take place in an area called ‘The City’. It’s reportedly four times larger than Dying Light‘s map – perfect for the returning parkour/zombie-slaying fun! Four player co-op will also be back, as is the game’s dangerous day/night cycle. This time round, players will have even more tools and weapons at their disposal, too.
Battlefield 2042
Release date: 22nd October 2021
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Battlefield 2042 is aiming to deliver the next-generation of warfare. And EA DICE are promising BIG things! With a focus on all-out chaos and “massive-scale fights”, the next instalment in the acclaimed FPS series will shift Battlefield 4‘s ‘levolution’ concept up a gear. Extreme weather conditions have been added, and players will have to fight it out while the storms rage. Battlefield 2042 will be set in a future engulfed by a war between the US and Russia. And to suit the scale of the conflict, an apt 128 players will be able to compete online.
Upcoming Games 2021 – Back 4 Blood
Release Date: 12th October 2021
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Of all the games coming out in 2021, Back 4 Blood perhaps has the most to prove. Why is that, you ask? Because it’s a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead and is being made by the same people. Both Left 4 Dead entries focussed on four-player zombie survival co-op. They were critically-acclaimed at the time of their release but their much-requested sequel never materialised. Back 4 Blood will feature similar gameplay – including an ‘AI Director’ which oversees the action and dictates difficulty, the number of enemies, and more. In a departure from its predecessor series, Back 4 Blood will introduce a card system. Players will be able to build a deck of cards that tweaks gameplay, including health, stamina, and damage modifiers.
Halo Infinite
Release Date: Q4 2021
Platform: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
As the only game on this list with no fixed release date in 2021, it remains to be seen if Halo Infinite will actually arrive this year. Its development has reportedly been somewhat troubled. But as the new instalment in one of gaming’s most popular franchises, fans have high expectations for Master Chief’s next outing.
As is often the case with Halo, much of the focus has been on the game’s multiplayer portion. Microsoft are launching it as a free-to-play game, with the obvious intention being to capture as many players as possible across the PC and Xbox platforms (yay for cross-play). Developers at 343 Industries have also said they don’t want Halo Infinite to be a “grind for players”. And they don’t want them to have to treat it “like a job” in order to finish its battle passes and seasons. That bodes well for multiplayer, and this will buck the trend of many of other modern FPS games should they deliver on it.
