It’s that time of year again. Vanguard is almost upon us. However, attention has already turned to Call of Duty 2022. And speculation about future instalments is always half the fun with CoD. We know Infinity Ward will be working on the next game, which has started the rumour mill turning. 2019’s Modern Warfare rebooted the franchise’s most popular sub-series and it was well-received by fans. So, what does that mean for 2022’s CoD? What is the next Call of Duty?

All signs point to the next instalment in 2022 being Modern Warfare 2. Reports of the game’s existence have already surfaced online, with various claims being made regarding its story, themes, campaign, and features. But is any of this information legitimate? And will Modern Warfare 2 just be more of the same from one of gaming’s most predictable franchises? Here’s what we know so far about the rumoured Modern Warfare 2 2022…

2022 Modern Warfare 2 release date

Let’s get this out of the way first. Whether the next game is Modern Warfare 2 or not, most people will be wondering when is the next CoD coming out? Given that every new CoD hits the shelves in either October or November, you can mark your calendar for either of those months in 2022. Of course, there are rumours of development problems and delays every year. But no recent instalment has been delayed prior to release. So don’t expect this one to be pushed back either. It’s almost guaranteed to arrive in time for Christmas next year.

Who is making the next Call of Duty?

Next year’s CoD is being developed by Infinity Ward as part of the series’ three-year developer rotation. As we’ve already mentioned, because their last title was the highly successful Modern Warfare in 2019 most people expect 2022’s game will be a sequel. Its development likely began shortly after 2019’s CoD was released.

Modern Warfare 2 2022 campaign

Industry insider Tom Henderson previously shared on Twitter that 2022’s CoD is Modern Warfare 2. He also divulged that its codename is ‘Project Cortez’. Additionally, further information surfaced claiming the game will focus on United States special forces battling drug cartels. It’s said to take inspiration from numerous films including Cartel Land, Sicario, No Country for Old Men, City of God and more. So, for those wondering what the next Call of Duty is about, there you have it. We think it sounds like a compelling concept for a series in need of a fresh direction.

Infinity Ward’s plans for the game’s campaign don’t stop there, at least according leaker @RalphsValve on Twitter. Apparently, the campaign in 2022’s CoD will be “gritty and unrelenting” and there will be “no winners in this story”. Realistic gore – including disturbing death animations – is said to be a major part of it, too. RalphsValve elaborated: “if an enemy combatant is shot, they will not die immediately, depending on where they’ve been wounded: they’ll beg for their lives, insult you, call out for their Mother, hallucinate, gurgle/moan/groan/death rattle, convulsions.”

High intensity moments in the campaign will make your character tremble and struggle to insert magazines, and weapon jamming will also feature. A new “Moral Compass” system will supposedly be introduced, which will surely add a unique dimension to the campaign. It’s rumoured to be similar to Red Dead Redemption 2‘s Honour System. That means decisions may impact how the campaign progresses. We’re certainly intrigued to see how the Modern Warfare 2 Moral System is implemented.

In another new report (thanks, VGC), it’s stated that “Task Force 141 will be returning… [and] will be scrapping the desert-themed military uniforms and bulky helmets for tiger-striped uniforms and boonie hats.”

Will Modern Warfare 2 have a P.T. Silent Hills horror mode?

One of the strangest rumours about the new Call of Duty game 2022 is that it’ll have a horror mode inspired by Hideo Kojima’s legendary P.T. For anyone who doesn’t know, P.T. was a ‘playable teaser’ for Kojima’s eventually cancelled Silent Hills game. Although brief, P.T. sure was scary. It placed the player character in an endless looping corridor while being stalked by a ghostly figure called Lisa. However, as intriguing as that game mode sounds for CoD, these rumours don’t align with what Infinity Ward has planned. So don’t expect to see this spooky, far-fetched mode in the finished product.

Is there a new Warzone map in Modern Warfare 2?

VGC’s latest report also suggests a brand-new Warzone map is being made for Modern Warfare 2. Apparently, it will replace Vanguard‘s Caldera Warzone map, much like Caldera will soon replace Verdansk. It seems the new map will be based on familiar locations from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 and link them all together. Maps rumoured to be incorporated are: Favela, Afghan, Quarry, Terminal, and Trailer Park. It’ll be interesting to see how they pull this off.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer

New Call of Duty 2022 multiplayer is said to take significant inspiration from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. There were plenty of rumours that the original’s multiplayer was being remade, just like its campaign. These whispers were apparently true, although the remade multiplayer has been scrapped in favour of 2022 Modern Warfare multiplayer. Having said that, assets from the remade original will be carried over to next year’s game. This will apparently include maps and weapons. As you’d expect, multiplayer operators will be based on characters from the game’s campaign.
