Cinema Reopening: The Top 5 Blockbusters You Can’t Miss

These are the films to watch out for when cinemas reopen in the UK...

The cinema reopening has been a long long time coming. For many people, it could well be the activity they have missed most since the start of the pandemic. Lucky for us in the UK, cinemas are reopening next week on Monday 17th May. While there might still be some social distancing rules to follow, we can’t wait to get back in theatres. So, with cinemas reopening, what films should you be making the trip to see this summer?

What films should you see with cinema reopening?

#1 – Godzilla vs. Kong

When is it out in UK cinemas? – 17th May

Godzilla vs. Kong is the definition of a blockbuster. And with cinema reopening, we NEED a good blockbuster. Between the mind boggling scale of its two lead monsters and its incredible special effects, Godzilla vs. Kong is can’t miss. And judging from the positive reviews it has received, you wouldn’t be wrong to make it your first movie back.

In case the title isn’t self explanatory enough, the film is about Godzilla and King Kong (both fresh from their own standalone films) going to war with one another. As you might guess, complex plot and characters take a back seat in this one. But who actually cares? We just want to see big dino fight big monkey!

Cinema Reopening #2 – Spiral: From The Book Of SAW

When is it out in UK cinemas? – 17th May

In Spiral, Chris Rock plays detective, Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks. He has big shoes to fill as he follows in the footsteps of his father, Marcus Banks, played by Samuel L. Jackson. The younger Banks teams up with rookie William Schenk (Max Minghella) to investigate grisly murders reminiscent of previous Jigsaw killings. However, Zeke soon finds himself at the centre of the killer’s gruesome game.

OK – we are somewhat doubtful, too. After all, there have been eight previous films in the SAW franchise. And it’s fair to say the quality has hardly been consistent over the years. But the trailer and casting of Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson has us VERY intrigued. Maybe, just maybe, Spiral can differentiate itself from the rest of the franchise and be a treat for returning horror buffs.

Cinema Reopening #3 – Nomadland

When is it out in UK cinemas? – 17th May

Acclaimed actor Frances McDormand stars as Fern, a woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, up sticks and becomes a nomad. Leaving her old town and life behind, she travels the American West and lives out of a van.

Until Nomadland won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress at the 93rd Academy Awards, we hadn’t heard of it. In fact, I’d be surprised if many people had. However, it’s since been on the lips of cinema buffs everywhere. Whether it will be everyone’s cup of tea remains to be seen. Oscar-winning drama films are notoriously inaccessible for the masses. But whether or not it’s something you’d usually watch, when better to give it a try than when cinemas reopen for the first time in months. It is supposed to be the “best” film of the pandemic era, after all.

Cinema Reopening #4 – Nobody

When is it out in UK cinemas? – 9th June

Now there’s a familiar face! Nobody stars Bob Odenkirk of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame. Given his previous role as the shady yet cowardly lawyer Saul Goodman, Odenkirk isn’t someone who springs to mind when you think of action movies. But his casting in Nobody is certainly interesting. And Odenkirk is nothing if not a fantastic, versatile actor.

Odenkirk plays Hutch Mansell, an ordinary suburban man who fails to defend his family during a home break in. The aftermath of his apparent (but misjudged) cowardice triggers him to unleash his long simmering rage on those who seek to do his family harm. It’s brutal, violent and bloody. And, boy, does it sound fun. Not only that, but Rotten Tomatoes has Nobody at 82% – which is damn good for an action flick. Make sure to check this one out.

Cinema Reopening #5 – Black Widow

When is it out in UK cinemas? – 9th July

Let’s face it – Marvel movies are a staple of modern cinema. Love them or hate them, they are undoubtedly popular. And while the superhero genre is hugely oversaturated, you can’t go wrong with a good comic book film. Black Widow has been on the cards for a long time now. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been delayed three times. But with things finally starting to look a bit less bleak, fans might finally see Scarlett Johansson make her triumphant return as Natasha Romanoff.

In Black Widow, Romanoff finds herself alone in the wake of the events in Captain America: Civil War. She must now confront a dangerous conspiracy with links to her mysterious past as a spy. Black Widow promises a fearsome enemy for Romanoff as she deals with the broken relationships left in the wake of her path to becoming an Avenger.
