Few titles are as beloved by gamers as Elden Ring. The excellent FromSoftware RPG was one of 2022’s best video games and conversation about it persists. Aside from its punishing combat, it’s best-known for its complex lore, strange characters, and marvellous, multi-faceted setting of the Lands Between. Because its world is so varied, players explore numerous weird and wonderful locations. And some Elden Ring fans think one room in particular “probably smelled weird”. It’s certainly a funny thought – but one that’s hard to disagree with.

When players first reach the Roundtable Hold – Elden Ring‘s ‘hub’ area – a number of doors are locked. This includes the doors leading to the mystical Two Fingers and their translator Finger Reader Enia. To access the room, players must first acquire a Great Rune.

The Two Fingers in Elden Ring are vassals for the world’s all-powerful Greater Will. They are central to the game’s mysterious plot. While they may be divine beings, the Two Fingers are undoubtedly grotesque in their decaying appearance. Because of that, one Elden Ring fan has been pondering the odour of the room it resides in.

In a post on the Elden Ring subreddit, user u/ZenBrickS shared an image of the Two Fingers and wrote: “All jokes aside: this room probably smelled weird.” Other players were quick to offer their opinions on the amusing thought. u/Krazziegirl said: “Pretty sure the entire roundtable hold smells bad. There are rotting corpses in almost every room that no one bothered to clean up.”

Another user commented on their horror when they initially encountered the Two Fingers: “the way I recoiled in disgust when I first saw them…”. Meanwhile, u/Tricyu said: “i always knew it smelt crazy in there”. One Reddit commenter actually tried to imagine the smell of the room: “Like skin and wet bandaid.”, they wrote.

Other fans began thinking about how the rest of the Lands Between smells. u/Skitch__Patterson remarked: “I had this same thought tonight when I was wrapping up Fia’s questline in deeproot depths.” Regarding Caelid, one user wrote: “The tarnished are probably only breathing from their mouths when they travel around Caelid lol. That place has gotta stink to high hell”.
