One Day is the latest hit TV series to take Netflix by storm. This romantic drama follows young lovers Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew from their graduation in 1988 and through each subsequent year of their lives.

Along the way, their lives change dramatically. Both experience their fair share of personal difficulties and tragedies, but their roads always lead back to each other.

Mid-way through the series, it is revealed that Dexter’s mother – Alison – is suffering from some form of illness.

Exactly what this illness is isn’t explained and viewers are left guessing. Ultimately, she dies and this sends Dexter spiralling into depression, drug use and alcoholism.

Naturally, viewers will be curious about exactly what caused Dexter’s mother’s death.

How did Dexter’s mother die in One Day?

Dexter’s mother likely died from cancer in One Day.

While this isn’t explicitly stated in the series, it is strongly implied that this was the cause of her death given the changes in her physical appearance and overall deterioration.

The 2011 film of the same name attributes her death to cancer, so it is reasonable to assume it is the same in the new TV series.

Ultimately, the specific illness that caused Dexter’s mother to die doesn’t matter much. The outcome for Dexter and Emma would’ve been the same regardless of how Alison passed away.

Eventually, after a long period of mourning, Dexter seemingly moves on from Alison’s death and becomes a better man.

Sadly for him, however, there was more tragedy to come.
