Why Are PS Plus Games So Bad?

It’s a popular question online every single month. “What are this month’s PS Plus games?” PlayStation Plus subscribers are always eager to find out what freebies are up for grabs. After all, who doesn’t want something in return for their subscriptions costs? But it seems players are routinely disappointed with the selection of complimentary titles on offer. So, why are PS Plus games so bad? C’mon, Sony. We’d love to know.

PlayStation Plus (commonly referred to as ‘PS Plus’) has been around since 2010. It arrived almost four years after the launch of PlayStation Network (PSN). For anyone who doesn’t know, PS Plus is the PSN’s premium subscription service. And the most popular part of its premium offering is its monthly free games. PS Plus subscribers get three free games every month – two PS4 titles and one PS5 title. As I’ve mentioned, it’s a popular talking point. Speculation is rife and leaks ahead of launch happen all the time. However, Sony just can’t seem to deliver on subscribers’ high expectations. And something needs to change if the company want to keep their customers happy.

What games are free with PS Plus?

Countless games have been provided for free via PlayStation Plus over the years. And when the PS5 launched in November 2020, Sony introduced the ‘PlayStation Plus Collection’. The PS Plus Collection offers 20 of the PlayStation 4’s ‘best’ titles for free to anyone who owns a PlayStation 5. Those games are:

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Bloodborne
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles Edition
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Days Gone
  • Fallout 4
  • Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition
  • God of War
  • Infamous Second Son
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Persona 5
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Until Dawn

That’s quite the list (albeit one that hasn’t been updated in almost a year). And let’s not forget – you don’t have to download free monthly PS Plus games immediately. You can simply add them to your library and download them at your convenience. So, many subscribers (especially those who own a PS5) likely have a huge collection of free titles in their digital game library. Despite this, many monthly games aren’t particularly enticing or even worth playing. Which brings us to the main point of this article…

Why don’t Sony release better games for free?

If you look down the long list of titles provided at no cost via PS Plus, you might wonder why subscribers complain every month. These games are free, after all. But it all comes down to freshness and quality. And lots of the PlayStation Plus freebies simply aren’t new or very good. Sure, you get the occasional surprise. Days Gone back in April 2021 is a great example of a real treat provided via PS Plus. It was underrated and under-appreciated on release, and found new life when it arrived on PSN’s premium service. And some months do deliver *some* games of note. Hitman 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Control: Ultimate Edition are recent PS Plus offerings that were well-received by subscribers.

However, that doesn’t stop the majority of these games from being disappointing, one-play affairs. I mean, look at October 2021’s games. Hell Let Loose, PGA Tour 2K21 and Mortal Kombat X. Mortal Kombat X came out in 2015. It doesn’t matter how good it might be. Players will inevitably be disappointed when a game is six years old (and one many will have already downloaded via the PS Plus Collection). August 2021 provided Hunter’s Arena: Legends, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Tennis World Tour 2 – I think the less said about that month the better.

As for why Sony don’t release more exciting titles via PlayStation Plus, the reason is fairly obvious. If the latest games were provided for free every month, players wouldn’t have any incentive to pay for them. But with the rise of Xbox Game Pass, it stands to reason that Sony should reconsider their approach to ‘free’ games. Especially with recent reports pointing out that PS Plus is actually losing subscribers.

PS Plus games November 2021

The PS Plus games for November 2021 haven’t been officially confirmed by Sony. Although it seems they’ve been leaked ahead of time once again. Players will likely find the upcoming offering to be one of the most disappointing of the year. Who knows – maybe PS Plus games aren’t so bad and we’re just spoilt. Anyhow, here are the rumoured PlayStation Plus games for November 2021:

  • Knockout City (PS4/PS5)
  • The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners (PSVR)
  • First Class Trouble (PS4/PS5)
  • Kingdom of Amalur: Re-Reckoning (PS4)
