Madame Web poster mistaken for WWE event by wrestling fan

A pro wrestling fan and writer has hilariously mistaken the Madame Web movie poster as an advert for a WWE event.

The upcoming superhero film set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) is scheduled for release on 14 February 2024. It follows lesser-known Marvel hero Cassandra Webb (AKA Madame Web).

Its trailer – which dropped in November 2023 – was widely mocked for its questionable editing and dialogue. Now it’s the turn of its poster, which has caught the unexpected attention of WWE fans.

Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) containing the poster, pro wrestling writer and former WWE marketing coordinator Colby Applegate noticed its similarity with posters for past Elimination Chamber shows.

Elimination Chamber has been a staple of WWE’s premium live event (PLE) schedule for more than a decade. It features the eponymous cage match, where superstars battle it out usually for a championship opportunity or the title itself.

The match typically features six wrestlers. Two begin and the others are released from pods surrounding the ring at five-minute intervals.

Due to the nature of the match, the event’s posters usually lean heavily into its concept. The posters often show the floating heads of the six competing WWE superstars in a sort-of hexagonal arrangement.

The new poster for Madame Web looks very similar, showcasing the titular character and the film’s supporting cast in the familiar Elimination Chamber-style layout.

Reacting to the poster, Colby said: “Thought this was an Elimination Chamber [poster] for a second”.

Other wrestling fans clearly agreed, as the tweet achieved more than 6K likes in less than 12 hours. They also shared their own funny takes on the poster.

Wrestling journalist Jim Valley responded “Damn. I picked Dakota Johnson to win the Rumble.” Another wrestling fan commented “Winner gets to face Tom Holland Spider-Man in his next movie”.

With expectations for the SSU’s upcoming movies at an undeniable low following the disastrous Morbius, it’s no surprise that audiences are looking for any excuse to mock Sony’s latest superhero efforts.
